Joy Dekok (Nijmegen, 1965) has worked as a photographer for more than 35 years. During her professional training, she developed a strong affinity for studio photography and went on to build her career primarily in advertising and corporate photography, specializing in portraiture.
In 2008, Dekok continued her studies at ArtEZ University of the Arts. While her background as a professional photographer was firmly rooted in analogue photography, her time there introduced her to the creative possibilities of the digital image. Since then, digital image editing and the combination of photographic elements have become integral to her artistic practice.
In her personal work, Dekok creates quiet, contemplative compositions that at times evoke the tradition of the still life. Her images emerge through a slow and deliberate process of collecting, selecting, and composing. She draws both from an archive of her own digitally captured photographs and from a collection of found objects and elements from the natural world and everyday life.
By bringing together different photographic elements, Joy Dekok constructs new images distinguished by their understated atmosphere and subtle sense of disquiet. Her work occupies the space between documentation and imagination, between the tangible object and its layers of associative meaning, inviting viewers to slow down and look with care.

Joy’s art can be found in private collections and adorning walls in various countries, including the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, France, Spain, Portugal, the United Kingdom, the United States, and Hungary.
Joy Dekok (Nijmegen, 1965) is ruim 35 jaar fotograaf.
Tijdens haar vakopleiding ontwikkelde ze een voorkeur voor studiofotografie. Ze werkte in de reclame- en bedrijfsfotografie en specialiseerde zich in portretfotografie.
In 2008 vervolgde ze haar opleiding aan ArtEZ Hogeschool voor de Kunsten.
Als vakfotograaf zeer vertrouwd met analoge fotografie ontdekte ze een nieuwe wereld: die van het digitale beeld. Digitale beeldbewerking werd haar belangrijkste medium.
Haar beelden ontstaan doorgaans in een langdurig proces van verzamelen, selecteren en componeren. Joy put enerzijds uit een archief van digitaal opgeslagen eigen fotografisch materiaal, anderzijds uit een steeds groeiende verzameling gevonden objecten en elementen uit de natuurlijke, alledaagse omgeving. In haar werk maakt Dekok composities die soms bijna stillevens zijn. Door verschillende fotografische elementen samen te voegen, construeert ze afbeeldingen met een ingetogen sfeer en subtiele vervreemding. Slijtage, verval en kwetsbaarheid maken de gefotografeerde objecten tot dragers van tijd en herinnering. De voorstellingen zijn uiterst realistisch, maar tegelijk magisch. Soms confronterend, maar ook vertederend. Ze dagen de beschouwer altijd uit tot een tweede blik. Haar werk maakt werkelijkheid tot verbeelding. Door realistische afbeeldingen op een surrealistische manier te combineren brengt ze een nieuwe werkelijkheid tot stand.
